Ferrari presented the 849 Testarossa on September 9, 2025, reviving one of its most recognizable names for a plug-in hybrid flagship rather than a nostalgic remake. The model succeeded the SF90 Stradale and retained the basic architecture of a twin-turbocharged V8 supported by three electric motors.

The name carried expectations

“Testarossa” refers to red-painted camshaft covers and is associated most strongly with the wide, side-straked road car launched in the 1980s. Applying the name to a modern all-wheel-drive hybrid tied Ferrari’s history to its current engineering direction.

Ferrari quoted a combined output of 1,050 metric horsepower, or cavalli vapore. Metric horsepower is slightly different from U.S. mechanical horsepower, so direct comparisons should use the same unit. The specification represented a 50-CV increase over the SF90 Stradale.

Electricity as a performance tool

The front electric motors enabled all-wheel drive and torque management, while a third motor supported the rear power unit. A plug-in battery allowed limited electric operation but was primarily part of a system designed for response, acceleration, and control.

That distinction matters. A performance plug-in hybrid can post an electric range figure and still be optimized around repeated deployment of both power sources. Real-world efficiency depends heavily on charging habits and use.

Aerodynamics and thermal demand

Ferrari said the 849 generated substantially more downforce than the SF90 while controlling drag. High-output hybrid systems create demanding cooling requirements for the engine, turbochargers, motors, battery, brakes, and cabin. The body therefore served both aerodynamic and thermal functions.

The Assetto Fiorano package reduced mass and added more track-focused hardware. As with any such package, the useful question for an owner would be whether its tires, ride, clearance, and setup fit actual use rather than its theoretical advantage.

What this first look could not establish

Specifications cannot reveal brake feel, steering communication, ride quality, thermal consistency, or how naturally the hybrid systems blend. Torque & Trend did not drive the 849 Testarossa and does not present this as a review.
