Nissan revealed the third-generation Leaf for the United States on June 17, 2025, recasting one of the earliest widely sold modern EV nameplates as a more aerodynamic, crossover-like vehicle. The change addressed two pressures at once: American buyers’ preference for crossover packaging and the charging expectations established by newer EVs.

A different kind of Leaf

The original Leaf was recognizable as a compact hatchback. The 2026 model used a higher, smoother body with a fast rear roofline. Nissan said the design achieved a 0.26 coefficient of drag for U.S.-market versions. Drag coefficient does not describe total aerodynamic resistance by itself—the frontal area also matters—but the figure signaled that efficiency was a central design target.

Nissan announced two battery choices and front-wheel drive. The company’s June 17 material described the larger pack as 75 kWh and the smaller as 52 kWh. Final range varies by trim, wheel size, testing, temperature, and use, so shoppers should compare the EPA label for the exact vehicle rather than treating a launch estimate as universal.

Charging moves into the current market

The U.S. model adopted a North American Charging Standard port. That decision was important because the earlier Leaf’s CHAdeMO fast-charging connector had become less common in new U.S. infrastructure. Nissan also described Plug & Charge capability, which can allow a compatible vehicle and network to handle authorization after connection.

The charging inlet alone does not guarantee access to every station or every charging speed. Network enrollment, adapter policy, station voltage, battery temperature, and the vehicle’s charging curve still shape the experience.

Cabin technology

The reveal highlighted available dual 14.3-inch displays and Google built-in services on selected trims. Nissan also announced a route-planning function intended to account for charging stops. These systems matter because EV navigation is increasingly tied to battery preconditioning and charger availability, not just directions.

What remained to verify on the archive date

On June 17, pricing and complete trim-by-trim EPA certification were not the central facts of the reveal. Those items belonged in later buying coverage once published and should not be backfilled into this archive report as though they were known on the reveal date.
